Health Technology

Fitness trackers, smart scales, sleep rings, and GPS watches to measure what matters.

Health technology has moved well beyond step counting into genuinely useful territory — sleep staging, heart rate variability, blood oxygen, and even at-home ECG and lab testing are now available in consumer devices that would have required a clinic visit a decade ago. But more sensors and more data don't automatically mean more insight, and this is a category where marketing claims routinely outrun what the underlying technology can actually validate.

The most useful health tech products share a common thread: they measure something specific and meaningful well, rather than measuring everything poorly. A single-lead ECG that's genuinely validated for AFib detection is more useful than a device claiming to track a dozen metrics with unclear accuracy on any of them.

How We Evaluate Health Technology

Every product on this page is assessed against measurement accuracy relative to independent validation or regulatory clearance where applicable, the honesty of the manufacturer's claims relative to what the underlying sensor technology can actually support, data presentation quality (whether the companion app helps you act on the data or just displays numbers), and comfort and battery life for anything meant to be worn continuously. We're skeptical of devices whose marketing outpaces their actual clinical validation, and we say so.

How to Choose

Start with the specific thing you actually want to track, since no single device does everything equally well. Sleep-focused tracking favors ring form factors, which tend to offer better signal quality and battery life for this specific purpose than a wrist-worn device balancing many other functions. Serious athletes training for a specific sport benefit more from a sports watch with deep, sport-specific metrics than from a general wellness tracker. Anyone with a specific medical concern — irregular heart rhythm, blood pressure monitoring — should prioritize devices with genuine regulatory clearance for that specific application over general wellness gadgets making similar-sounding but less validated claims.

Recurring costs matter here more than in most categories: some platforms bundle full feature access into the hardware price, while others require an ongoing subscription for functionality you might assume was included. Factor total cost of ownership into the comparison, not just the sticker price.

However sophisticated the device, treat consumer health tech as a trend-tracking and awareness tool rather than a diagnostic one. A concerning reading is a prompt to see a doctor, not a self-diagnosis.
